WEBITORIAL: Karla Gruss and Ira Walendy Continue an Ongoing Portrait Dialogue

German photographer and designer Karla Gruss presents a new chapter in her continuing portrait series with haute couture designer Ira Walendy, an evolving collaboration that revisits the relationship between fashion, authorship, and personal presence through recurring photographic sessions.

A woman in a white tank top and light blue jeans stands beside a white van, holding a woven handbag and wearing a headscarf. The scene features greenery and a road in the background.

Developed as a bi-annual project, the series follows Walendy not as a styled subject but as an active participant in the image-making process. Known for her material-driven couture practice and slow approach to garment construction, Walendy’s work emphasizes the dialogue between body and fabric, a sensibility that carries into Gruss’s photographic approach. Rather than constructing editorial narratives, the images emerge from observation, allowing moments to unfold naturally in front of the camera.

Gruss focuses on transitional gestures: movements before they resolve, expressions caught between intention and awareness. The photographs avoid overt performance, instead capturing subtle shifts in posture and attention that reveal the human presence behind the designer’s public identity. Across the series, repetition becomes a method, allowing small changes over time to shape the visual narrative.

Serving as photographer and creative director, Gruss oversees the conceptual direction and visual execution of each installment, maintaining a consistent framework that documents the collaboration as an ongoing artistic exchange rather than a single editorial production.

As one observer notes:

“As someone who has spent decades looking at couture up close, I think what makes Gruss’s work stand out today is its refusal to over-stage couture. The photographs feel direct and unpolished in the best sense, reminding us that fashion becomes meaningful when it is lived in, not performed.” — Monika Gottlieb, Vintage Couture Collector.

With each release, the project builds an accumulating portrait archive shaped by continuity and trust, positioning the series as a long-term exploration of identity through sustained collaboration.
