Exploring Central America with Style

A trip to Central America can be a tremendously rewarding experience. From the iconic cloud forests of your Costa Rica holidays, to the Emerald Coast of Nicaragua, there’s plenty of natural beauty to appreciate in this part of the world – before we even consider the vibrant cultures of the peoples who live here.

Getting the best from your trip, however, means wearing the right clothing. You’ll want attire that’s practical, but that nevertheless allows you to express yourself. Let’s take a look at a few essential components of a good holiday wardrobe for Central America.

Sustainable Swimwear

The chances are good that you’re going to be spending at least a small portion of your time lounging beside a pool, or in the sea. As such, the right swimwear is essential.

The right swimwear, for many eco-conscious shoppers, might also be sustainable swimwear, made from recycled materials. Other environmentally-conscious brands, like Hunza G, might focus on eliminating waste, by introducing flexible fabrics that might adapt to the changing shape of your body, year after year.

What your swimwear actually looks like matters too. You’ll want to choose pieces based on the shape of your body, and your personal taste. To capture the Central American vibe, you might look at minimalist one-piece suits, or high-waisted bikinis, as well as patterns inspired by Central American art and culture.

Lightweight, Breathable Linen Pieces

In hot climates, linen makes a fantastic, stylish choice. This breathable fabric will help you to remain cool and dry, even when the weather is sweltering. It can be used to make shirts, dresses and trousers, which might be appropriate for a variety of events – from daytime treks to dinners in the evening.

When it comes to colours, you’ll typically be faced with a choice of neutral, natural-looking hues like soft white, and bolder, more eye-catching shades – of the kind you might find on a tropical shirt or dress. If you know that you’re going to be moving between different environments, like the beach and the city, then you might build an ensemble that can be easily re-jigged and adjusted to suit the environment.

Tropical Print Button-Up Shirts

This year, those vibrant, tropical-style button-up shirts are enjoying a bit of resurgence. These garments are incredibly good fun, they come in a variety of styles, and they’re practical, too. You might sport one over the top of a tank top in the day, or button it up during the evening for dinner. Look for a shirt that showcases some of the animals and plants near where you’re staying – you’ll blend right in!

Convertible Travel Jackets

Finally, we should note that the weather in Central America isn’t always predictable. If you want to be able to weather the occasional downpour, then you’ll need to look for lightweight, water-resistant jackets that can be easily shed when the weather warms up again. It’s worth investing in a good one from a reputable brand like Patagonia, especially if you intend to spend a lot of time out in the wilderness.
