When you’re sailing the open seas, you might not spend much time thinking about how you’re dressed – and, when you do, it will be practical concerns that dominate, rather than aesthetic ones.

But travelling on a yacht doesn’t mean that you don’t need to look good – or even glamorous. If you’re chartering a yacht for your holiday, then you’ll need to think about your options when it comes to fashion.

Let’s take a look at a few classic styles that might inform your holiday wardrobe.

1920s Gatsby Glam

The 1920s were dominated by excess and glamour. You can evoke this period with the help of a few stylistic touches. A flapper-style dress, complete with a fringe, might be suitable. Prefer silk, satin and other luxury fabrics, and look for deep blacks and golds. Clutch bags, headbands, art-deco jewellery, and thick eyeliner might all contribute to the look. If you look like you could plausibly feature as an extra in Baz Luhrmann’s version of ‘The Great Gatsby’, then you’re probably on the right track.

1960s Riviera Elegance

The sixties was a period of major stylistic change – but for entirely different reasons. This was a significant time in the world of luxury sea travel, and you can bring back the vibe with the help of a few choice items and accessories. Prefer pastel-coloured boatneck tops, and sleeveless blouses. Look for wedges and subtle kinds of print, like polka dots. A wide-brimmed, floppy hat, and a suitable oversized pair of sunglasses, can make for practical additions to the holiday wardrobe, as well as effortlessly retro ones.

1940s Glamour

The forties were all about unashamed femininity. Skirts and dresses tended to be long and flowing, and preferred to trousers just about everywhere. You might look for a knee-length floral dress, paired with a set of satin pumps. Complete the look with a suitable silk scarf, which you might either wear over the shoulder, or as a headband. Your choice of jewellery, and cosmetics, will also matter. Wear red lipstick and ‘winged’ eyeliner if you want that truly retro feel.

1970s Boho Luxe

The seventies were distinct for the bold colour choices, which became dated over the following few decades but are now coming back into style. If you want to really make a statement, then go all-in on tones like mustard and rust (those shades of yellow and brown that instantly evoke the period).

Obviously, wide-leg trousers and platform sandals are a great choice. You might look for makeup with warmer tones – these will tend to match nicely with life on a luxury yacht. Getting the seventies look right means embracing it – don’t try to serve half-measures here!
