An engagement is a significant occasion – and many couples in the UK are seeking to mark it with a series of professional photographs. Your engagement photos should ideally capture the mood and spirit of the subjects – that’s you, and your significant other. And this means hiring the right photographer, and thinking carefully about how you’re going to present yourself.

Among the more important considerations ahead of the shoot is your wardrobe. What should you wear?

Classic and Elegant

Your choice of attire should reflect not just your personality, but the setting in which you’re going to be photographed. Will it be a secluded garden, a city skyline, or an inspiring church interior?

If you want to keep things traditional, you might favour a classic look. For her, this might mean a maxi dress in a neutral tone, like champagne or blush. Pair this with soft curls and a few choice pieces of eye-catching jewellery. Finding the perfect engagement ring is, of course, vital – and this particular item should in most cases enjoy special prominence in your engagement photos.

For him, a slightly different approach might be required. A tailored suit or blazer, along with a light shirt and dark leather shoes, will almost always fit the bill.

Casual and Cosy

It might be that you’re a little more laid-back, and you’d like to capture an effortless vibe. Ironically, this might require a little bit of work. Make sure that you’ve scouted a suitably cosy location. There are plenty of them in London alone.

For her, a loose sweater or blouse might be appropriate. Keep the jewellery minimal, and go for the kind of rugged ankle boots that you might comfortably walk a mile in. For him, a flannel shirt and a blazer might work, along with a set of practical trainers or boots. Both men and women might favour a comfortable pair of jeans.

Themed or Playful

If you want to make your engagement photos a little more quirky, then you might look at building everything around a given theme. This theme might be designed to evoke a particular mood or memory. For example, if you both love Disney’s ‘Frozen’, then you might dress up as characters from the film. You can be as subtle or as full-on as you like. These are your photos, after all, and your personal taste should be paramount.
With that said, a few basic principles will help you to stay grounded. Keep everything consistent, and let your choice of accessories do most of the work of communicating your theme. For women, this might mean a hat, or a flower crown. For men, this might mean suspenders and a bow tie.
