Global sportswear brand Reebok has recently dropped its Reebok X Victoria Beckham Collection – a collaboration between the renowned athletic apparel company and famous British fashion designer Victoria Beckham – for Fall/Winter 2019. The collection borrows from Beckham’s aesthetic interpreted in a sportswear context, as it features a variety of outfits, from gym basics to some unique silhouettes. The project comes as the second collaboration between Reebok and the designer – the previous one being for Spring, earlier this year.
This collection was inspired by Beckham’s interpretation of the London Youth Culture, and striking a balance between sports and style. The designer’s popular high-heeled, posh and tasteful aesthetic seeps into the ‘elevated streetwear’ garments in terms of their minimalistic, chic silhouettes and the reserved colour palette, yet still delivering fashion along with functionality. She also focused on making the clothes as adaptable and functional as fashionable, to make them just as fitting for the streets as they are for the gym.
Beckham’s design process was influenced by her personal passion for working out and commitment to fitness, as well as her dance training in the 80s and 90s. Keen on depicting this passion in her work, the former Spice Girl states, “Working out makes me feel strong and empowered and that ethos is reflected throughout the collection.”
Known for her fitted, tailored silhouettes for her own brand and personal style, Beckham has incorporated refined tailoring in this collection, while also managing to deliver performance and durability. The collection is womenswear dominant with a couple of unisexual silhouettes, priced between £30 to about £300. Following a basic colour scheme of classic black, blush pink, navy blue, khakis and few deep hues, the colours of the garments are suitable for layering up, particularly considering the collection’s season.
Including a range of outfits – from basics like socks, leggings, sports-bras and briefs to the fancier, shapely garments like bomber jackets, wide-legged trousers and hoodies – the collection finds its place with athleisure being at the trend center-front. The collection also offers long-pleated skirts with high slits, touching on the dance inspiration aspect of the design, as they convey a ballet-based essence. The big branding and graphic logos on garments such as the hoodies is a nod to the 80s – also, one of the key inspirations of the collection.
